When do we update this site? / When will 20XX tornadoes be added?
Tornado Archive compiles data from many different sources. For now, updating our data for Tornado Archive is a manual process. This process is every bit as time consuming and complex if we do just a few new data points, or an entire year all at once. For U.S. data for example, all data points from the NWS NCEI/DAT or SPC are not finalized until well into the the new year. As such, we typically wait until the April or May time-frame in a given year to update U.S. data along with everything else that has been compiled from the previous calendar year for modifications, new datasets, or updates to other international datasets. Check back in ~May each year to see all updates. In the more distant future, we intend to streamline this process and make Tornado Archive updates far more frequent.
How often to we update the code for Tornado Archive’s Data Explorer?
We also time our code updates and new features with the latest dataset updates as mentioned above. Typically around May each calendar year.
I have spotted a problem with a specific tornado, Should I post it in this page?
Our preferred method for informing us of errors, updates, or more precise data can be done by simply clicking any tornado or damage path and selecting “Report an issue:” This will load a form with the specific data point called out. This greatly simplifies our process and data is submitted directly to someone responsible for keeping track of our data!
